Behind the Clay: A Neurodivergent Maker’s Story

🧠 Behind the Clay: A Neurodivergent Maker’s Story

I’m also proudly neurodivergent, which means I experience the world through a slightly different lens—one full of textures, color obsessions, and 2 a.m. creative bursts.

This is a little peek behind the curtain (or workbench!) at how being neurodivergent has shaped my handmade clay earring biz.

🎨 Creativity as Regulation

For me, crafting isn’t just a hobby—it’s a grounding ritual. When I roll out clay, blend colors, or arrange beads, I’m not just making jewelry. I’m self-regulating. I’m calming my nervous system with rainbows. 🌈

Each piece is infused with that energy—calm, joy, and a little bit of chaos magic.

💡 Sensory-Friendly by Design

I know what it’s like to be overwhelmed by scratchy fabrics, itchy tags, or heavy jewelry. That’s why I:

  • Use lightweight polymer clay
  • Avoid resin topcoats (they can irritate skin)
  • Offer titanium or plastic posts for sensitive ears

It’s sensory joy, minus the ouch.

🌈 Embracing the Weird

A pair of mismatched handmade statement earrings made from brightly colored neon polymer clay in layered abstract shapes. The left earring includes shapes in purple, orange, yellow, blue, and green and spells “F*ck Normal.” The right earring features neon pink, yellow, orange, purple, and green elements spelling “Stay Weird.” Both earrings are suspended from rainbow-plated stainless steel earwires and shown on a flat white background

Being neurodivergent means I don’t always follow traditional rules… and neither do my designs. I like funky shapes. I mix neon with pastels. I make things that don’t match on purpose.

Because our brains aren’t meant to fit molds—and neither is our jewelry.
